Detailed itinerary for 9 days Rwanda Cultural and Community Experience

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali airport to the booked accommodation

Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide or driver who will transfer you to your hotel in Kigali for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Kigali city tour

After breakfast, you will set out for a city tour to different prominent places like the Kigali solaire, stade regional, Kigali genocide memorial site, Kandt Museum and the Belgian camp. Transfer to Bugesera after lunch in the afternoon to the reconciliation village, Nyamata and Ntarama genocide churches. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Travel to Akagera National Park

After your breakfast, check out of the safari lodge and begin your journey to Akagera National Park, with a stop at Kirehe–imigongo to view different ancient art pieces and get to learn the technique that was used in those times. Proceed to Akagera National Park enjoying the beautiful scenery as you go along. Check into your safari lodge and later set out for an evening game drive. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Morning Game drive and Village visit

Wake up to an early morning game drive after breakfast; this will be a good chance that you will spot a lot of wild games and birds. Return to the lodge for lunch and later set out to the northern part of the park for a pastoralist heritage experience. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Another Morning Game drive and a boat ride on Lake Ihema

After your breakfast, you will have another early morning game drive, a chance to spot lots of wild games and birds. After lunch, you will have a stunning boat ride on Lake Ihema to spot aquatic wildlife like crocodiles, hippos and over 50 species of water birds like pelicans, and sunbirds, among others. Retire to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: An ethnobotany tour and twin lakes

Set out for an ethnobotany tour after breakfast and later transfer to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo with lunch en route. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Mountain Gorilla tracking Volcanoes National Park

You will set out to the park headquarters for a briefing before getting into the thrilling gorilla tracking activity in the volcanoes forest. Remember to carry the necessary items that you will need while carrying out this activity. After your one-hour’s viewing, you will return to the lodge for lunch and later Visit Buhanga Kinigi cultural village for an awesome cultural encounter. Dinner and overnight at your booked safari lodge.

Day 8: Community Excursion and Lake Kivu

This will be an adventurous day at the Banana and Sorghum beer production plant. You will set out to the plant after your breakfast and check out of your safari lodge and get to participate in the production of local beer using sorghum and small bananas. After breakfast, transfer to Lake Kivu for an evening of relaxation. Dinner and overnight at Lake Kivu Hotel.

Day 9: Transfer from Butare to Kigali

After breakfast, you will transfer to Butare (the intellectual town of Rwanda) to visit the Basilica of Kabgayi, the ancient King’s palace at Nyanza and the National Museum. Drive back to Kigali Airport for your return flight. Meal plan: F/B
